Ce \u00ab nous \u00bb, Northern Range n\u2019a, comme tout film authentiquement politique, d\u2019autre t\u00e2che que de le chercher, de l\u2019inventer. C\u2019est son sujet et sa passion.<br>C\u2019est d\u2019abord le portrait d\u2019un territoire, ce Nord maritime de la France, entre Dunkerque et Calais, o\u00f9 Olivier Derousseau vit et travaille : paysages saccag\u00e9s, installations portuaires, panaches de fum\u00e9e arrach\u00e9s par le vent aux chemin\u00e9es des industries p\u00e9trochimiques. C\u2019est aussi une suite musicale en cinq tableaux, sorte de blues minimal, amoureusement compos\u00e9 \u00e0 la m\u00e9moire du temps et du peuple perdus : basse continue des camions sur l\u2019autoroute, percussions du vent dans les micros, tous les bruits du monde m\u00eal\u00e9s sur une trame de guitare r\u00e9p\u00e9titive. C\u2019est encore une m\u00e9ditation m\u00e9lancolique sur l\u2019\u00e9toffe des jours, la chair du devenir, l\u2019irr\u00e9m\u00e9diable effacement et les traces qui attendent d\u2019\u00eatre sauv\u00e9es. Car ce que les hommes d\u00e9truisent, le temps en efface les traces \u2013 \u00e0 Calais, exemplairement, l\u2019\u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re ville appel\u00e9e \u00ab jungle \u00bb, b\u00e2tie pour et par les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s. Qu\u2019en reste-t-il ? Des bribes de parole, qui disent les espoirs d\u00e9\u00e7us. Deux silhouettes sur une photo, l\u2019empreinte des bulldozers , bient\u00f4t rien. Comment lutter l\u00e0-contre ? Par le travail artistique, r\u00e9pond Derousseau. mais dans ce qu\u2019il lui reste d\u2019ouvrier. On est dans une maison, le cin\u00e9aste et ses compagnons sont \u00e0 l\u2019ouvrage : des traces sont recueillies dans le vaste dehors, des actes sont enregistr\u00e9s dans la lumi\u00e8re, parmi les fleurs. Il y faut une croyance : que contre tous les enfers du dehors, l\u2019ouvrage amoureux peut esquisser un paradis. \u00c0 condition de ne pas cueillir les fleurs, mais de recueillir le passage d\u2019un rayon de soleil sur les corolles. Ne pas cueillir, mais faire quand m\u00eame le bouquet. Pour se recueillir. Car, merveille ultime, c\u2019est en s\u2019adressant \u00e0 un mort, \u00e0 un compagnon d\u2019ouvrage disparu, que le cin\u00e9aste ajuste les traces, noue le film comme un bouquet d\u00e9pos\u00e9 pour tous les morts, oubli\u00e9s, expuls\u00e9s de cette terre. Northern Range est leur Passion, soit l\u2019inscription de \u00ab traces qui nous ressemblent \u00bb, comme disait Leutrat \u00e0 propos du film de Godard. Des fleurs \u00e0 la boue, du vacarme des camions au murmure des vagues, l\u2019\u00e9nigme de cette ressemblance est bouleversante<strong>.\u00a0\u00bb <\/strong><br><em>Cyril Neyrat FID Marseille<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>English version<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fidmarseille.org\/en\/film\/northern-range\/\" target=\"_blank\">The film opens with the word<\/a> \u201cus\u201d in italics, for everyone to define for themselves. The sole mission of Northern Range, like any authentically political film, is to seek and invent this \u201cus\u201d. It\u2019s both its theme and its passion.<br>It\u2019s firstly the portrait of an area, France\u2019s north coast between Dunkirk and Calais, where Olivier Derousseau lives and works: ransacked landscapes, port installations, plumes of smoke from the chimneys of petrochemical facilities, blown by the wind\u2026 It\u2019s also a musical suite in five parts, a kind of minimalist blues lovingly composed in memory of time and people that have disappeared: the constant bass of juggernauts on the motorway, the percussion of the wind in the microphones, all the world\u2019s sounds blending into a repetitive guitar thread. And it\u2019s a melancholy meditation on the stuff of days, the flesh of the future, on irretrievable erasure and the traces waiting and hoping to be saved. Because time erases what people destroy \u2013 in Calais, for example, what remains of the makeshift city known as \u201cThe Jungle\u201d, built for and by refugees? Snatches of conversation that describe disappointed hopes; two figures in a photo; the traces of bulldozers\u2026 and soon, nothing at all. But how can we combat this? Through artistic work, replies Derousseau, but from what remains in him of the working class. We\u2019re in a house, and the filmmaker and his companions are at work: traces are gathered from the vast outdoors, actions are recorded in the light among the flowers. Faith is required\u2026 faith that despite the hell outside, this labour of love can portray a paradise\u2026 but only on condition not to gather the flowers, but to reap the passing of a ray of sunshine on the petals; not to gather flowers, but nevertheless to arrange a bouquet, to gather one\u2019s thoughts and mourn. Because \u2013 the ultimate wonder \u2013 it\u2019s by addressing a dead person, a fellow worker now deceased, that the director adjusts the traces, bringing the film together like a bouquet of flowers left for all the dead, the forgotten and the expelled from this earth. Northern Range is their Passion, the inscription of \u201ctraces that resemble us\u201d, as Leutrat said about Godard\u2019s film. From flowers to mud, from thundering juggernauts to whispering waves, the enigma of this resemblance is overwhelming.
